Standing card player. A study for "En fængselsscene i Rom"(A prison scene in Rome). Unsigned. Oil on paper laid on canvas. 35 x 22.
The figure in this painting is a study for the standing card player outside the prison cell in Marstrand's famous painting from 1837, "En fængselsscene i Rom" (A Prison Scene in Rome, the Nivaagaard Collection, inv. no. 0202NMK). If you compare the differences between the study and the finished painting, you can gain an insight into Marstrand’s artistic process. The two figures outside the prison cell have changed positions so that the standing figure in the final painting is facing to the left – as opposed to the study, where the figure is facing to the right. In addition, the seated figure in the final painting has been given some of the features from the standing figure in the study, including the distinctive hook nose and sideburns.
